European Day of Languages – 26 September
European Day of Languages is marked on 26 September every year. It is part of the Language Policy Programme of the Council of Europe, and has been celebrated each year since 2001 all over Europe – together with the European Commission.
Stemming from the conviction that linguistic diversity and plurilingualism are tools for achieving greater intercultural understanding, it aims to support and promote Europe’s rich linguistic diversity and to encourage language learning.
On the occasion of this celebration, a range of events are organized across Europe to convince the general public of the importance of learning more languages, in order to inform, raise awareness and motivate European citizens.
Students of the High School of Tychero – and students of the Junior High School in our common school complex – celebrated the European Day of Languages during the English lesson.
The EDL T-Shirt Contest webpage printout was used as authentic teaching material to inform the students and encourage them to participate in an online design competition. Students linguistically exploited the text to acquire relevant vocabulary and familiarize themselves with the meaningful task of online submission. The activity offered the opportunity of linguistic and artistic expression in a multidisciplinary context. Both schools showed great interest in the process and participation was on a voluntary basis. Students' work
